Can't hear him!!! | Reply
All those fancy videos from topcoder... but I can't watch!

Linux: no sound, everything else is fine
Windows: double speed! (with sound).

Any hints on what codec to install? I'd prefer linux, but I'd even boot Windows just to hear him.

I use mplayer on linux and it works.
I remember that some time ago I have copied some (windows) dll's in /usr/lib/win32. If i remember correctly the dll's were downloadable as a pack from mplayer's site.
Re: Can't hear him!!! (response to post by rgrig) | Reply
hm, i have the same setup...

[ebuild   R   ] media-libs/win32codecs-20050412
[ebuild   R   ] media-video/mplayer-1.0_pre7-r1  USE="-bindist% -livecd%"

mplayer tells me this, amongst other things:

vo: X11 running at 1400x1050 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (":0.0" => local display)
==========================================================================
Opening video decoder: [ffmpeg] FFmpeg's libavcodec codec family
Selected video codec: [ffodivx] vfm:ffmpeg (FFmpeg MPEG-4)
==========================================================================
Audio: no sound
Starting playback...
VDec: vo config request - 320 x 240 (preferred csp: Planar YV12)

can you tell me what versions of mplayer and win32codecs you use?

thx!

I prefer using vlc on linux.

apt-get install vlc

And you don't need to worry about a thing ;-)
Re: Can't hear him!!! (response to post by dispanser) | Reply
I can't actually play the sound because I use an X-terminal which doesn't run nas(yet). But my version of mplayer does detect an audio stream, and decodes it using the faad codec. Here's the output when I run, hopefully you can figure out what you need from this.

tried gxine, vlc, mplayer. all three show the same result -- HiltonLange speaking, me not hearing anything.

mplayer is playing sound fine for many other video files, it's just these strange mov files that it doesn't like.

However, vlc provided some error message:

[00000221] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `mp4a'.

You're not missing much.

But for the sake of OTHER .mov movies you might want to watch, has anyone actually considered the native quicktime player if you're on Windows? Works flawlessly.

This is the mplayer version:

MPlayer dev-CVS--4.0.2 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team
CPU: Intel (Family: 8, Stepping: 1)
Detected cache-line size is 64 bytes
MMX2 supported but disabled
SSE2 supported but disabled
CPUflags: MMX: 1 MMX2: 0 3DNow: 0 3DNow2: 0 SSE: 1 SSE2: 0
Compiled for x86 CPU with extensions: MMX SSE

I can't tell you what codecs I use. In Ubuntu they don't come as a package. I have d/l them from the mplayer website but I don't remember the date of the package.
Re: Can't hear him!!! (response to post by rgrig) | Reply
got it working, thanks everyone!

it turned out that my mplayer version had no "aac" support compiled in (whatever that is).

USE="aac" emerge mplayer

recompiled mplayer, and finally was able to hear HiltonLange. And I was finally able to
listen to Eryx, tomek and SnapDragon. Not to forget Skiena, of course. That made my day!

Where could you find their links?
Re: Can't hear him!!! (response to post by lyc1977) | Reply
I always downloaded the videos when they were released, so I had them on my harddisk. Cannot find a link here at topcoder anymore, sorry.

Our news page has a list of all the archives on the bottom of www.topcoder.com/tc, one of which is for TopCoder Movies. Here's the archive:

Re: Can't hear him!!! (response to post by ntrefz) | Reply
That page is missing a bunch of videos, possibly from TCO03 or TCO04? I remember seeing both Snapdragon and tomek's videos a year ago - no sign of them now...
Re: Can't hear him!!! (response to post by HiltonLange) | Reply
That's really just because the news page and its archives didn't exist until about a year ago, after the TCO03 and TCO04. I think the movies you're referring to are from the TCO04, which you can find here:
