Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by RalphFurmaniak) | Reply
to be quite honest, I'm not sure anymore. I think it factors itself out. You end up increasing your submission accuracy (slower, less "jump-to-conclusions", more thorough solutions), at the cost of not submitting so often. For low-value contests (250-400-900 type) caffeine is a definite benefit, because of the speed needed and the requirement not to over-engineer the solution. For high-value contests (300-550-1100 type) it's exactly the opposite, and you'll want to avoid caffeine. I'm not sure on challenge ability with/without caffeine yet, my self-study is not yet conclusive.

Man, I've been doing this too long. :)

I would think that in real life, a DFS would take less time than a BFS, given travel time between the various fringe elements....
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by antimatter) | Reply
In practice you usually know some estimate for the distance to target. I always choose BFS when estimated_distance << graph_diameter.
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by antimatter) | Reply
Well, when we're talking roads, there aren't usually that many dead ends to backtrack from, so you'd end up just taking one very long path which could lead you halfway across the city when you only really wanted to go a couple of streets away.
Re: You know you're a TopCoder when ... (response to post by leadhyena_inran) | Reply
If I really had a choice I would use Dijkstra's algorithm and get there a lot faster. However, BFS and Dijkstra and most other algorithms you could imagine require the ability to teleport.

You know you're a TopCoder when you install a teleportation device in your car so you can Dijkstra search.
Re: You know you're a TopCoder when ... (response to post by the_one_smiley) | Reply
you know, when you are talking about using BFS, DFS, and Dijkstra's to get from your house to the store rather than looking at a map or asking someone for directions, that says something about your topcoder mindset ;-)

I laughed at that, but then it came true. Here is a problem based on yesterday's event.

Kainamruf Hplar is sitting by his laptop listening to King Crimson and doing some programming. He then needs to get Stroustrup from his bookshelf at point B, but realises that his headphones are plugged into the computer and he is not willing to interrupt the song. The computer is plugged into the socket at point S with a cord of length L, and the firewire port is connected to his ipod dock at point D with a cord of length M. If the computer must stay on the plane of his desk (height=0), and his armreach is N, can he get his much needed reference book?

I treat the alg competitions as something that takes my mind away from more serious things ;) like design/dev competitions or reviews.

BTW, which campus are you at, at U of T? Also, Is Graham still teaching OS stuff? :) (I am not doing Comp/Sci any more so I don't know)

Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by dskloet) | Reply
Haha thank you! Well its been a long wait...and I even had to do other competitions (gasp!) like Al Zimmerman to keep my mind busy.

On the other hand, I had SO much more spare time. For example, I was checking the site only like once per day, whereas before it would be at least 3 times per day. I couldn't do any of the problems, because I couldn't access their descriptions, so I had to figure out what the problem is from the editorial and thats very hard. I read all the forums, but was really frustrated by the fact that I can't post. Obviously I didn't want to start a new account, since that would be illegal. Especially I wanted to post in the one about that game where you guess what the next word should be...

I also managed to get heaps of work done in my research, so thats also good. Oh and I finally got a ... wait for it... a girlfriend!!! So maybe, it wasn't such a bad experience after all. So if you like to try something different for a change I definetely recommend going without TopCoder for 3 months, see how long you can last ;)

That should read "I don't like grammar cops, ..." Which is spelling correction, not a grammar correction.
Re: You know you're a TopCoder when ... (response to post by Rustyoldman) | Reply
No; that's a comma splice. It should read "I don't like grammar cops; they make me mad.", or "I don't like grammar cops. They make me mad", or "I don't like grammar cops: they make me mad", or "I don't like grammar cops because they make me mad", or something else.

They only reason grammar cops would bother to correct you is that you make them mad.

It is, of course, debatable whether you are being unreasonable in expecting to be rude (write unclearly so that it takes much effort to read and is against established convention) and get away with it, or whether they are being unreasonable in expecting you to be considerate all the time. ;-)

Well, usually. In my above correction, which was not completely correct itself (but which does sort of follow the tradition of making the same error as the one you are pointing out), my main motivation was to try to make/complete a joke. An anti-grammar cop posting going without corrections just seemed like a straight line begging for a punch line.

Now that a little mini-thread has been launched discussing the subtleties of layers of errors in this tiny post and the heroic efforts grammar cops are making to save the world, my heart is warmed. All is as it should be.

...you open up a clever solution and laugh hard enough to be heard in the next office.

If you're wondering, the solution in question was Jan_Kuipers practice room solution on the SRM 318 Div I hard. It's just so beatiful/audacious.

Kind of reminds me of Kawigi's 10 nested-for-loop solution for jumpyNumbers (I think that's the one).
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by jmzero) | Reply
I guess you're thinking of this, but I didn't actually quite make it to 10 nested for loops. Even if I had, though, the SRM 318 div 1 hard has brought me to greater insanity. I count 30 total for loops, one of them nested 23 deep. I decided against indenting, and also decided against actually naming the loop counters in most of those for loops. If we have more problems like this, we won't be able to follow the TopCoder coding conventions established by John Dethridge, whose code can only have 53 unique identifiers in the same scope.
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by Kawigi) | Reply
To make that one just a little crazier: instead of using hard coded numbers in each loop, use a variable that is incremented in the initialisations and decremented in the updates and then you can make all the loops in each set of 10 for loops exactly the same. See my practice room submission for clarification.
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by Kawigi) | Reply
That solution made my day. Kind of an abomination, but awesome.

(I'm sure someone did the 10 for loops on JumpyNum - was sure it was you. Guess I was seeing your tendencies to crimes against programming early)
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by jmzero) | Reply
Possibly. Although relative to most highly visible TC members, I think I usually have very clear, well-formatted code. The hackiness of it goes up with my desperation, though, and a much nicer-looking solution to that problem was just timing out by a factor of about 2 in the worst case I could come up with (but it passed all the examples in time). It looked more like tmyklebu's solution without that cool bitmask increment thing he did that I still have to analyze sometime.
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by Kawigi) | Reply
I meant abomination in the nicest possible way; this solution and your --n%9+1 are two of my all-time favorites. In any case, it would be more than a little hypocritical for me to seriously impugn anyone's coding style.

Oh, and thanks for pointing out tmyklebu's bit-mojinations - that's something I need to get figured out (in VB.. sigh).

You can.

It used to be the case that you required > 0 points to challenge. Now, you can challenge with exactly 0 points or higher. There is no requirement to have opened a problem.
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by NeverMore) | Reply
So you could in theory decide whether to compete, after having seen the problems? (given that you only care about challenging)

Edit: I believe I'm having this discussion for the second time and IIRC somebody finished it last time by explaining you can't challenge if you didn't open a problem.
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by dskloet) | Reply
Hm, OK, to be honest, I'm not 100% sure. I was sort of extrapolating from "you can challenge with 0 points".
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by NeverMore) | Reply
In the past, you could've technically challenged with zero points without having opened any problems. A while back, someone (I think it was aboyner?) asked the admins if one could do such a thing and they said no, so he tried a bogus challenge, was unsuccessful and was in the red 25 or 50 points. He then messaged the admins back and I think it was mike who said something like "Why the heck did you try that?" ;)

He was excluded from the ratings and I'm not sure if you can still technically do this, but it was possible at one point.
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by duner) | Reply
Yes, it was me :)

I had registered and couldn't participate for some reason (internet connection wasn't working, IIRC) and when I logged in the challenge phase was going on. I asked the admins whether I'd count in the rankings if I challenged, they said no, so of course I went ahead and tried it :)

I'm surprised you still remember, it was a long time ago (just looking at your algo history confirms this) :)
Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by aboyner) | Reply
Oh ok. From duner's post I somehow thought that you thought of the possibility of challenging without opening a problem, asked the admins about this, and were determined to try it out sometime. :-)

Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by d000hg) | Reply
Yes, but this is pointless since he's only trying to qualify to get a t-shirt. Submitting requires creating a dummy solution, which entails opening a problem, which qualifies you for the t-shirt ;P

There are some that have handles that look like full names, but I haven't included any I didn't know for sure. In addition there are a few names I know, but can't remember at the moment. A while back, I was writing an article on game theory for TopCoder. I realized, later, that there was already an article covering exactly the same ground (edit: only it's better than the one I was doing - here).

Anyways, for the article I invented a game with certain properties to demonstrate something or other. The article is worthless - and if possible the game is even less worthful - but here it is anyway. I think it fits in this thread somehow.

You can't think of a way to attend an 11AM SRM because it falls in the middle of the work day. But that doesn't stop you from attempting to figure out a way to attend every time it is the next scheduled SRM.

(Maybe I can take lunch early and go to a nearby coffee house with a wifi hot spot? Skip challenge phase and hope the 500 is hard enough to be hopeless for me or easy enough that I can solve it fifteen minutes before end of coding phase, then eat a bagged lunch in the car on the way back...

No, that idea still won't work.)

Re: You know your[sic] a TopCoder when ... (response to post by CamiloSoto) | Reply
Talking about hating other coders is unlikely to get you many pluses, especially in a thread which implies that your feelings are part of the common experience of all TopCoders.

Yes, sometimes people (seem to) get minuses just for asking a question. Why? It might be because the same question was asked and answered by others, maybe several times. It might be because of how or where the question was asked. It might be because the question is easily answered with Google. It might look as though you are trying to get someone else to do your work for you. Perhaps people think there is some other easy way you should have used to answer the question yourself, like just trying it or looking in a manual or textbook. There are many ways to ask a question which discourage people from trying to help. My theory is that newbies (regardless of rating) are more likely to ask poorly. [Of course a particular poster could have a history of many bad posts so that many people automatically give minuses to nearly all their posts. This has happened.]

People are not obligated to help you just because you asked. They have busy lives with other things to do. If someone helps you they are giving you a gift of their time. If they choose not to help you that does not make them arrogant.

Here is nice page about how to ask a question [on the internet] in a way that is most likely get the answers you want.
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

Personally when I see a post on TopCoder where the poster is too lazy to use the shift key, saves 0.2 seconds by typing "u" and "ur" and generally seems to have taken the minimum amount of time possible composing their message. My reaction (which might be wrong frequently) is that the poster must think that their time is far more valuable than the time of the many readers who have are slowed down trying to parse the mess. That sort of thing is efficient for text messaging or a chat room where one person sends and one person reads and a short coded message is the fastest way to deliver the information. But this is a long-lived professional forum hosted by a private software company, not a casual conversation. Just look around at most of the other posts. If your style is not similar to them (carefully worded and properly edited to be easy to read), your post will stand out (and usually not in a good way).

Re: You know your a TopCoder when ... (response to post by CamiloSoto) | Reply
Well, I actually think that the higher rated coders tend to be more helpful than the lower rated ones - Provided they have time to answer else they don't. At least I remember being a newbie (not like I improved that much) and TC forums and the chat really taught me things like dp, how to use doubles and flow algorithms.

Minuses will always be just minuses... We can't know for sure the minuses are because the person is low-rated or for other reasons, there is also no way to know the minuses are actually coming from higher rated people. Besides, I've seen gray and unregistered persons getting some pluses when asking good questions.

This is true, once I finished high school I felt incomplete, I needed to compete, that had become a part of me, a part of my life, a really important part. I managed to resist 1 year without competitions, then I finally found TopCoder, and with it, the programming contest world.

I'm pretty sure this is the same for many TopCoders.
